Explain why doctors long ago used bloodletting to treat their patients

They thought if they let enough blood out, it would get rid of whatever sickness the patient had or the "bad blood". Unfortunately, this was a not safe way to cure someone and bloodletting usually made the problem worse. Some patients even died from blood loss.
