Barbara McClintock was the first who discovered mobile elements (transposons) by recognizing the breakage that occurred at specific sites on corn chromosomes. The first element she discovered was a site of the chromosome breakage and she called it Ds (“dissociation”). Then, she noted that the movements of Ds are regulated by another autonomous element which she called Ac ("activator"), which can also promote its own transposition.
