Procrit is the brand name of the drug Erythropoeitin. Erythropoeitin is the hormone secreted by the kidneys that stimulates the production of red blood cells in the myeloid lineage. The nurse should explain that the drug Erythropoeitin is destroyed by the stomach acid and therefore will not perform its therapeutic actions; that is why it is needed to be given intramuscularly.
