UNIX was written in the late 60's early 70's. IBM has had numerous OS's going back to the 40's. MACintosh came out around 1983.

UNIX was written to run on various hardwares, and with the Linux kernel has become more or less the industry standard in servers. Microsoft is still, unfortunately, the dominant OS on the desktop.
