Patellar responses often strengthen with diversion how do you explain this observation

This observation may indicate that the patella is responding when its reflexes are tested and that those responses are being strengthened by other parts of the spinal cord that are not usual, indicating diversion. The patellar reflex indicates that there is activity in the L2, L3, and L4 segments of the spinal cord.
