In sociology, the theoretical perspectives that focus on the study of large scale social phenomenons such as social structure, social institutions and social change, are commonly known as macro-level perspectives.

According to such perspectives, social rules in a specific society are created to establish and maintain certain social structure. Social rules regulate conduct, therefore they can be seen as a way to promote and withhold social control.
