Why is water an effective solvent for many different types of compounds?

water is what we call a polar molecule meaning it has a partial positive charge on one end and a partial negative charge on the other, this is why it can dissolve most compounds because it attracts to the charges in other molecules. water can dissolve any compound except for lipids(fats,oils,waxes).
