X+Y=8 »» X=8-Y
now we can substitute X with 8-Y in the second equation, which was X-Y=2
X-Y=2 »» (8-Y)-Y=2 »» 8-2Y=2 »» 2Y=8-2 »» Y=6/2 »» Y=3
since X=8-Y, and Y=3, so X=8-3=5

X=5 and Y=3
