When we think about the law of conservation of mass, we tend to think about the actual mass of objects. However we forget that energy can be turned into mass, and in turn, mass can be turned into energy. Sometimes there is a loss in mass, but energy is released into the environment which we can always see or measure. So therefore the most inclusive unit of measure to use when referring to the law of conservation of mass is in fact the unit for energy, the joule.
