Hope and Tristan both worked hard over the summer. Together, they earned a total of $345. Hope earned $35 more than Tristan. How much did each of them earn?

a. Write a system of two equations with two variables to model this problem.

b. Use substitution to solve the system.

Let h = the $ Hope makes
Let t = the $ Tristan makes

a. h + t = 345
h = 35 + t

b. (35 + t) + t = 345
35 + 2t = 345
2t = 345 - 35
2t / 2 = 310 / 2
t = 155
h = (155) + 35
h = 190
