James McAlester was a former Confederate Soldier and Merchant who founded The Oklahoma Mining Company, which initially developed the coal mining industry in Oklahoma.

Prior to the foundation of his company, he served as United State Marshall for the Indian Territory. This led him to establish good relationships with the Choctaw Nation. When the Mining Company started operations, this improved the living conditions of the Indians of the reserves, as they benefitted from trade but also labor.
