what is the function of the nucleoid in a prokaryotic cell?

Though bacterial (prokaryotes) don't have a nucleus, the nucleoid is the area where the DNA is housed inside the cell - there is no membrane! The DNA (chromosome) of the bacteria is there along with RNA, proteins and enzymes that are needed for the cellular processes.
